RAYS OF SHAY
Prism of the Witch
Prism of the Witch
This piece was birthed as I dabbled in my first few larger festival painting experiences. I began it at Gem & Jam in Tucson and completed it at Desert Hearts in Flagstaff.
Creating art can be such a solitary activity and live painting allows me to create while engaging with others. People often apologize for interrupting in these environments, but truly that’s what we’re there for, to connect. If you ever see me at an event, do come say hi, I love to chat.
It took me quite a few events to learn how to stay in flow state with that much social engagement, to remain highly stimulated and somehow still focused. These events strengthened my nervous system capacity and helped pull me out of years of hermit mode.
Art, music, dance, connection.
Festivals and fun events where people’s hearts are open and in altered states of consciousness are ripe spaces for transformation, liberation, and empowerment to occur.
And yet, it's important to also acknowledge that where there is immense beauty and light, there is also darkness, toxicity, addiction, abuse, and escapism.
My intention in these spaces is for my work and presence to inspire, to be a reminder of the sacred. I deeply desire to make a positive impact on those around me.
I achieve this by tending to my energetic field, maintaining a clear channel and by being open, honest, vulnerable, present, and oriented toward service within the creative, dance (and any) community I step into.

For me the archetype of the witch fits well.
Especially one that is expressed in color. In high school I was a “scene kid” with the emo aesthetic...except vibrant in color. My hair was dyed black with firetruck red or hot pink, short and spiky. I loved polka dots, and my bedroom was painted lime green and hot pink too. Emo is usually “dark,” and while I resonated with that scene, I carried it in color.
That fits here as well. Many witches are cloaked in black, which I certainly embrace too, I do have strong Scorpio placements, but I love color. My first pieces were painted on black backgrounds, where I felt I was illuminating the darkness with my design. Color has always been my spell, a way of defying the void and bringing vibrancy where others only see shadow.
Festivals became my modern temples. Painting live within them felt like tending an altar & each dance sequence or brushstroke a prayer woven into the collective field. Just as I ventured out to take up physical space and share my creations with the world, the witch within me required courage to exist openly in my magic in a world where that expression has been suppressed and could mean death.
I remember the first week of my spiritual awakening when I awoke from a dream, shot out of bed and gasped out loud, “Oh my gosh, I am a witch,” as scenes of me offering tinctures and herbal remedies to my friends throughout the years flashed through my mind’s eye. That same week about 13 crows began gathering in my driveway each day, an owl in my neighborhood flew not ten feet above my head full wing span, and I wept when my roommate called the exterminator, thinking of how many spiders would be killed. Prior to this, I had carried severe arachnophobia, I did not have any spiritual friends or much exposure, all of this was shocking and I knew something profound within me had shifted. June 2020.
It was a couple more months before a voice in my head commanded me to go to the art store, and my journey as an artist would begin.
To be here now, sharing my stories and my art from a grounded place, feels like living proof of that initiation and the years I've spent in devotion, holding the vision of the life I desire to live as a full time artist and magical being.
This painting holds the imprint of stepping across thresholds, of fear dissolving into expansion, shadow giving way to color, solitude opening into community.
To me this piece is not only self-portrait, a reminder of the power of moving toward our desired reality.
-Thank you so much for supporting my art and making my dreams come true!
For Collectors & Investors
At this time, I am not offering my original paintings for sale. My originals are my personal assets, held for shows and exhibitions, and I know their value will appreciate further after the release of my forthcoming book. These premium canvases are the closest way to bring my work into your space while I continue to steward my originals *with the exception of commissioned work.
Bespoke Canvas Edition
Each canvas print is a bespoke piece. I order, prepare, and hand-paint the edges myself, so what you receive is not just a print but a work touched directly by my hands. “Bespoke” means made-to-order, created with intention, and uniquely yours. I want each canvas piece to carry the same care and presence as my originals, so that when you bring it into your space, you feel that living connection.
Premium 16x24 Gallery Wrapped Canvas
You will receive a 1.5 inch deep, gallery-wrapped & wired lyve canvas, museum-quality archival canvas that brings out the depth, vibrancy, and detail of my work produced as a bespoke collector’s piece. The canvas will be finished with hand-painted custom edges, extending the vision beyond the print and making the piece uniquely yours. Perfect for hanging in your home, studio, or sacred space, it arrives ready to display with no framing required.
To me, the edge is where the image refuses to stop at the border. It asks us to look beyond what is immediately visible and to consider what exists just outside our field of view.
Painting the edges is my way of reminding us that expansion happens when we move past the frame, past the limits of what we think we know. The edges reflect our own process of meeting ourselves beyond comfort zones, in the places where growth, change, and possibility live.
Each time you notice the continuation of design wrapping around the canvas, I invite you to remember that there is always more. More depth, more perspective, more of you waiting to be discovered beyond fear.
Please note: each order is printed and shipped to me first so I can complete the custom edge painting before sending it on to you. Mentally allow for additional processing and shipping time to honor this process. Feel free to reach out to me if you would like an estimate on my timing, otherwise the invitation is to be patient.
I appreciate you.
